The total strikes thrown in the fight were 287 for Jones and 75 for Smith. Smith went 35 for 66 for a landing rate of 54 percent. In total Jones went 125 for 167 in significant strikes during the fight for a landing percentage of 74 percent. Smith also landed the only leg strike he threw in the final round. Six of those landed blows hit Jones in the head. He threw 17 significant strikes and landed seven of them. After a meager output in rounds three and four, Smith picked things up in the final round. Jones landed nine of 17 head strikes, went three for three to the body and eight for nine in the leg striking department. The champ threw 29 significant strikes and landed 20 of them. Perhaps sensing he had the fight locked up, Jones backed off a bit in the final round, but not too much. As for Smith, his landing percentage was 100 percent, but he only threw one significant blow in the round, a leg strike. Jones landed all nine body blows he threw in the fourth round, he also landed the single leg strike he threw. He did not miss to the body nor did he miss in his leg strikes. Jones was not perfect in his head strikes, throwing 29 of those blows and landing 25. Jones attempted 39 significant strikes in the fourth stanza and landed 35 of those attempts. While Jones’ accuracy fell to 89 percent, his output ramped up and with that so did the number of strikes he landed. Things were bad for Smith in the third round, but they were worse in the fourth. All three of Smith ’s attempts were body shots. He attempted only three significant strikes. Smith, on the other hand, did not fare well in the third round. Jones went four of six in head strikes, ten of 11 in body blows and a perfect 13 for 13 in leg strikes. Jones attempted 30 significant strikes and landed 27 of them, which put his landing percentage at a whopping 90 percent. While Jones’ output dropped off a bit in the third round, his accuracy was astounding. As for the body, Smith attempted seven strikes and landed four. He threw 15 head strikes and landed eight. Smith focused on landing to Jones’ head in the second five minutes of the fight. He attempted 24 significant strikes and landed 14.

The second round saw Smith achieve his highest output. He went eight for 10 in body blows and 16 for 17 in his leg attacks. Jones’ accuracy with his body and leg strikes was once again excellent. He attempted 17 head strikes and landed six of those. Again, his targets were varied, but he was effective in head strikes in the second round than he was in the first. Jones threw 44 significant strikes in the second stanza and landed 30 of those. Smith was slightly more aggressive in the second round, the bad thing about that was that Jones was both more aggressive and more accurate, but one still got the sense that Jones was fighting a more technical fight and adhering to a game plan. Smith landed one of nine head strikes, three of four body strikes and eight of eight leg strikes. Like Jones, he did better when he targeted his opponent’s body and legs. He landed 12 of 21 significant strike attempts. Smith, on the other hand, had his second-best round in the first stanza. Jones landed just one of 11 attempted head strikes, but went five for seven to the body and a perfect seven for seven to the legs.

The champion fared much better with his leg and body strikes than his head strikes. For Jones, the 25 significant strikes he attempted in this round represented his lowest output in the five-round battle. Neither man was too aggressive in their striking attack during the first five minutes. Knowing they had five rounds to decide this fight, both fighters used the first stanza as a feeling out period.
